HEART - That's about the only word that can describe the efforts of the races
tonight.
Boys H.S. Mile -
Dan Zaccariello became Staten Island's 6th athlete to ever qualify for this
prestigious race and first since 1999.
Coming as the 10th seed, there was only one way to go and that was up! He
sat in a tight pack through the first 1/4 mile (64.9) as
the race started to slowly string out. At the half mile, he was in 9th, at
the tail end of the pack. As the race moved into the pivotal
3/4, eventual winner Pat Schellberg (Delbarton) would start to push the pace.
Zaccariello moved fast late, with two to go, for a
big move going from 10th to 6th. An incredible experience for an athlete
who's running career is just beginning to blossom.

CHSAA 4x800 Relay - We went into the Millrose Trials w/o
Zaccariello on the 4x800 since we were hoping for him to get
accepted into the mile. At the trials, Mike Baio rebounded in a big way
and was a key reason for why we were able to
qualify. However, at last weekends sectional meet; Baio pulled his
hamstring and would need to be replaced..
Lead-off leg Alex Civitano gave a scare to the 150 strong Viking faithful as
he "bided his time" on his 5 1/2 lap lead-off leg spotting
the entire field a size-able distance. However, with 2 laps to go, Alex
put on his trademark fiery kick going from last to hand-off in
2nd, right in the race, which was his job. Nick Italiano, the lone senior
on the relay, certainly benefitted from his 3 years of experience on the
garden track. He locked on to St. Anthony's and made a strong move to take
the lead. He held off St. A's Pat Murphy and handed the
stick to Junior Adam Civitano a step ahead of St. Anthony's. Adam held the
lead but St. A's was able to pass with 3 laps to go. Adam
in turn responded and wound up opening a sizeable lead going into the anchor
legs. Paulie Brancale, a junior, took Baio's spot on the
relay and gained some valuable experience for the future. He held the lead
briefly into his leg but faded and crossed the line in 5th.
A tremendously competitive race considering we were running our 4x800 with our
5th and 6th men on the relay and only lost by 7 seconds!
