5/23 - 83rd CHSAA Intersectionals - Icahn

In his final city championship, Capt. Danny Zaccariello cops the 1600 meter
run by unleashing a furious kick over the last 150 meters to avenge
last year's
close loss. This is the third city championship Zaccariello has won this
year. Junior Adam Civitano was on his way to a win in the 400
IH but a hit
on the 9th hurdle had him settling for 2nd place. Senior Mike Baio
officially has returned with a fine 1:59.3 lead-off leg on the 4x800
relay.
After suffering two injuries this year, he was finally able to break out and
snap 2 minutes. Meena Farid added a 5th place bronze medal in
the shot
put. Freshmen Mike Ceciliani had the Icahn Stadium
crowd on its feet by running a fine 3 laps (for the 1600) and then suffering
through an agonizing 4th lap!!

Adam Civitano lights the Oakwood track on fire with his impressive double.
In the 400 IH, he knocked off the #1 seed with a 54.39 FAT, crushing
his school
record. Adam is currently ranked #2 in NY State. With 90 mins of
rest, he almost took the 400 but settled for a big personal best in 49.93
FAT,
topping Adam Risi's school record from 1997! Meena Farid had a big day in
the throws with two big PR's including a win in the discus. Dan
Zaccariello defended his 1600 title. Later he would combine with Paul
Brancale, Alex Civitano and Tyler Franco to win the 4x800 relay. Bobby
Mirfield scores in both hurdle events including big PR's in the 110 HH

Penn Relays plaque.

4/17-4/18 - New York Relays - Icahn Stadium
A day of drizzle, win and cold didn't hamper the Viking efforts at Icahn
Stadium. The Varsity SMR just misses the win in the invitational race by a
hundredth of a second. Nick Italiano cracks under 23 for the fastest Sea
200 split in many, many years. The team smashed the school record and
is
currently #1 in N.Y. State. On the first day, Adam Civitano placed 3rd in
the 400 IH breaking Sean O'Shaughnessy's school record. He is
currently
3rd in NY State and ranked 8th in the U.S.
4/9-4/11 - Arcadia Invitational - Arcadia,
California
A great weekend for St. Joseph by-the-Sea H.S. as the program cements itself
as one of the premier track programs in the U.S. by virtue of a victory
in the
Invitational 4x800. Alex Civitano, Nick Italiano, Adam Civitano and Daniel
Zaccariello win the prestigous invitational by close to 4 seconds in a
near
school record - 7:49.15 FAT. Chris Murphy and George Setteducato nail down
some fast 200's and Vin Aceto sets a PR in the 800. Adam
Civitano wins the
400 IH on Day Two. The 4x400 relay just misses a school record. Dan
Zaccariello breaks the mile/1600 record as well. A GREAT
weekend for what
is sure to be a FAST outdoor season. - Race Videos posted for some races!
The Arcadia crew poses after a very
successful trip to California.
4/5 - Iona Invitational - Iona Prep
The outdoor season kicks off in fine fashion with some great performances at
the first meet of the season. Chris Murphy places 4th in the varsity 200
with a 23.1 PR. Mike Stabile, making his comeback, set a PR in the 200 for
the first time in two years! Bobby Mirfield sets a 6 second PR in the IH
while placing 5th. Luke Olsson takes 4th in the soph 1500 with a time that
converts to a near 5:00 min break for the mile. The Varsity, Soph and 2
4x400's all medal to end a beautiful day at Iona Prep. Overall 24
medals are won and 56 PR's were set.
3/31 - 4th Annual Blue & Gray
Invitational - Sea
Coach Mike Baio leads a balanced blue squad to the team victory. The
"handicaps" came into play and almost cost the team the win. For the 800,
1600 and 3200 events, athletes had to be within a certain time of their PR's to
prevent each race from being a crawl and kick race. The handicaps
led to 3
Blue team DQ's in the 1600. Despite the un-necessary tie-breaker, the Blue
team is victorious.

NATIONALS WEEKEND
TWO ALL-AMERICAN RELAYS
ONE STATEN ISLAND RECORD
3/14 - Nike Indoor Nationals - Armory
After Friday night's fireworks, the team head to Boston for the Nike Indoor
Nationals. The 4x800 relay had spent most of the indoor season ranked
in
the top 5 and had aspirations of pulling of an upset. That goal would be
challenged as the race got pretty physical with runners falling and much
elbowing and jostling for position. Alex Civitano handed off with a
steady 2:00.5 carry to put the Vikings in the chase pack. Nick Italiano,
making
his return from a hamstring injury, set his focus on the early leaders.
On his second (of 4) laps, he had to leap over a runner who tripped and fell.
When
he began his kick he was shoved by a runner coming off the turn.
Despite the rough leg, he was able to clock 1:59.4. Adam Civitano
ran a solid 1:58.9
and Dan Zaccariello stopped the clock at 7:52.65 FAT
for 4th place and All-American honors. A solid performance that should
leave the Vikings hungry
for an even better outdoor season.

ALL-TIME
3/13 - National Scholastics - Armory
The SMR kicks off the nationals weekend in fine fashion as we tie St.
Anthony's in the seeded section - 3:30.76 - 3:30.76. The officials needed
to go
down to the thousandths place to separate Dan Zaccariello and St.
A's anchor Payton Hazzard. Chris Murphy led off with a PR of 23.5
and handed
off in the back of the chase pack. George Setteducato
was able to maintain focus despite being spiked and having his show nearly fall
off. Adam
Civitano ran a big PR in the 400 of 50.4 to keep the team
close for Zaccariello. Danny showed tremendous poise while going out
smoothly in 53.4.
On his third lap he started to close the gap while going
through the 600 in 1:22.9. He took the lead going into the final lap and
put in a valiant effort to
avoid a late charging Hazzard at the line. The
SMR's performance is tied for the second fastest in CHSAA History! It also
shattered the island record
of 3:32.84 set by St. Peter's in 2005.
3/6 - NY State Champs - Cornell Univ.
For the second year in a row, St. Joe's has representation at the state champs.
Daniel Zaccariello races in the 1000 and Adam Civitano competes
on the CHSAA
intersectional relay.
2/23 - Eastern State Champs - Armory
Dan Zaccariello continues his assault on the record books as this time he
takes down the 800 meter school record. He just missed going wire-to-wire
as he was nipped out of the line and settled for second with a 1:56.01 FAT time.
Alex Civitano runs a huge race while anchoring the DMR to a 4:25
split, a 13
second PR. George Setteducato cracks 53 in the 400 as Bobby Mirfield dips
under 55 seconds. MEENA FARID sets a PR in the shot
put as well.
2/13 - CHSAA Intersectionals - Armory
Dan Zaccariello pulls off a tough double by winning the 1000 and 1600 city
championships. In the 1,000, he led from wire-to-wire in an uncontested
2:29.32 FAT, which was good enough for #5 in the U.S. and a new school
record. In the 1,600, with heavy legs he sat off the shoulders of the
leaders and responded to every move that was made. On the final turn, with
100 meters to go, Zaccariello bolted to the front outkicking the same
athlete
who just nipped him in the mile outdoors last year. His last 400 was a
sizzling 58.5.
Junior Adam Civitano qualified for the state team with
a personal
best and 4th place finish in the 600. The 4x800 relay placed fifth earning
bronze medals. The team finished in fifth place overall.

He adds a silver medal in the long jump as Frank Sconzo places fifth.

Charles Alcasid takes the varsity high jump while Nick Italiano (800 & 400) and
Daniel Zaccariello (1000 and 1600) earn two championship titles
a piece. Zaccariello, running his first 1,000 of the year smashed the school record
(2:35.08) and meet record (2:33.36) en route to a smoking 2:30.22.
Due in
the large part to his two wins and #2 U.S. ranking in the 1,000; Zaccariello
copped the meet's "Outstanding Track Performer" award. Adam
Civitano runs
one of the toughest races this year as he fell in the 600 and still bounced back
to place third; showing the heart that has him on the team's
top 4x800.
Alex Civitano runs a big PR in the 3200 while placing 5th. Jumping Jack
Liam Vogt places 4th in the TJ with a new soph record of 40'2.5"

IN MEMORY OF DAN KELLEY '04
For years this program has talked about how it is more than
just a team but a family, a brotherhood. Through success and failure,
nothing changes. With the passing of Dan, we come together again,
including many alumni who graduated years ago. The important thing
to keep
in mind is that the legacy of "DK" doesn't end now. We will continue to
remember the legacies of those that fall before us, especially
the legacy of DK.
As a new soph, he was an average runner at best and through
hard work; was able to work his way through the ranks. After graduating,
he kept
running and improving. At his peak shape, he was a contender for the
Staten Island Men's Triple Crown. In addition, he returned
to coach in
2007. For years, he was always an alumnus who constantly followed the team
through the newspaper and website while always
offering his two cents on things
relating to the team. This loss isn't easy to get over but we will move
forward while trying to follow the lead
of a model alumnus.

"Rolling the Dice," the team races w/o star miler Dan Zaccariello in
the hopes that he gets a bid into the Millrose H.S. mile. Adam Civitano leads
off and
finishes his leg in the heart of the race. Alex Civitano, the
call-up, fell to 8th after the first 400. It looked bleak for anyone who
didn't know Alex's ferocious
"kick." A blistering last 300 had us back in the
race for Mike Baio. Baio, who injured his achilles in early December was
being nursed back. His comeback
race was a less-than-stellar 2:05.2 last
weekend at Hispanic. If Baio didn't return to form, our Millrose dreams
would be crushed. Capt. Mike Baio showed
tremendous heart in holding his
position with a 2:00.7 split. Senior Nick Italiano, a three-time Millrose
veteran, went out like an animal to move up. He just got
nipped at the
line by Kellenberg and Chaminade but more importantly held off the flurry of
runners that moved on the last straightaway.
An amazing 8:04.12 was
the cut to make the garden this year as the CHSAA league does it yet again. As a matter of fact, at the time of the
race, 7 of the CHSAA's teams beat the
nation's #6 team!!

continues to roll with an impressive 2:02.5 lead-off leg in the 4x800.
Frank Sconzo cops a novice city

able to garner a silver medal in the long jump as well. Mike Fiechter

lead and was followed by solid legs by Adam Civitano & Nick Italiano. Alex
Civitano made his "big race"
debut with a 7 sec PR in the 1600. On the
double, Nick Italiano (50.9), Adam Civitano, Chris Murphy and Dan Zaccariello
broke the school record in the SMR.

11/20 -
NYS Federation Champs - Bowdoin Park
Daniel Zaccariello (#2) and Alex Civitano (#3) crack the Bowdoin Park
all-time lists in a well deserved trip to Wappingers Falls. They represent
the team
solid efforts in the very crowded fields. Zaccariello, boxed in
traffic throughout, posted a time of 17:23, while passing several runners once
he finally got clear.
Junior Alex Civitano topped several of the league's
top runners and enjoyed his first state meet experience by running 17:41. (He
didn't let losing to Coach in
bowling the night before effect his race!!)
11/14 - CHSAA Intersectionals - VCP
A rough day for what has been a spectacular XC '09 season. Team-wise
it just didn't happen today. All was not lost as Dan Zaccariello & Alex
Civitano
qualify for the state meet next weekend.
11/7 - Frosh/Soph Intersectionals - VCP
Tyler Franco paces the sophs while Luigi Tirro is the #1 frosh. A
tough day for the underclassmen.
11/3 - Frosh Island Champs - Clove Lakes Park
The frosh continue to roll with a memorable championship season thus far.
Mike Ceciliani (#6) and Luigi Tirro (#7) crack the all-time lists in leading the
team
to a 2nd place finish. This ties our best finish in school history
and is the 3rd consecutive year we have finished in 2nd place which bodes well
for the future.
The "B" squad places 7 in the top 10 en route to a 1st
place team finish.
Frosh Island Champs - 2nd Place
Congrats to Tom Bradley '01, Lauren Torrelli '03,

10/31 - NYCHSAA Sectionals - VCP
Capt. Daniel Zaccariello cops the individual title to lead the team to the
runner-up spot. Today's 2nd place varsity finish is the best showing in
school
history. Unseasonably warm, humid conditions made PR's few and far
between. The freshmen have a banner day with a surprise 2nd place finish
in a tight team
battle. Three points separated St. Joe's, Fordham and
Xavier. Mike Ceciliani, Luigi Tirro and Daniel Acerra crack the frosh
all-time list. Joey Lama again steps
up as the #5 man. In his first

performances. Daniel Zaccariello leads the team to a 3rd place finish by

finish is our best finish since 2005. Justin Henderson leads the JV
team as Nick Italiano and Pat Lewis also crack the top 15. Freshmen Luigi
Tirro

The freshmen lead the charge on the day! Luigi Tirro sets the school
record for 1.2 miles as Danny Acerra just missed in the "B" race. The 5

Daniel Zaccariello starts the season off with the individual win in a fine
16:51, good enough
for #2 on the All-Time List. Junior Alex Civitano
cracks the top 5 in the race. All of the varsity times are significantly
faster than last year's Breen meet as the
team places second. The JV was
lead by Luke Olsson, Tyler Franco and Justin Henderson who all cracked the top
10 in the race. The JV team finished in third.
Thirteen freshmen
make their racing debuts as Danny Acerra leads the way. The freshmen
placed fourth in the team standings. All in all, a FANTASTIC start
